Simon Hanes is a California born, Brooklyn-based composer, performer and arranger. His work revolves around bridging his main influences; soundtrack music from 1960s/70s Italian films, contemporary classical music, and non-idiomatic improvisation. Hanes composes for and performs extensively with his 13-piece Italian Soundtrack-Pop ensemble, Tredici Bacci, and has collaborated with such musicians as Elysian Fields, Ryan Power, Ruth Garbus, JG Thirlwell, Charlie Looker, Vincenzo Vasi, and underground legend Gary Wilson. Hanes has worked as an orchestrator and conductor for the legendary producer Hal Wilner on his most recent album, working with singers Marc Almond and Emily Haines. Hanes has also conducted the Sun Ra Arkestra as part of Harper Simon's upcoming project "Meditations On Crime". Other projects include extreme noise-thrash trio Trigger, which has performed in the US and Europe as part of composer John Zorn's bagatelles project, and a washed-up 1970s Italian lounge singer alter ego named Luxardo. Simon also works extensively as an arranger, most recently with Lina Tullgren, Ryan Power and Eartheater. He also recently finished his first film score, for Graham Mason’s upcoming detective film “Inspector Ike”. Hanes was musician in residence at Pioneer Works in April 2018, and has signed on to compose the score for Curtis Whitear's documentary about Dustin Yellin, currently in production.
